29 Scholars Compete for the Pro Futura Scientia XV Fellowships

With its well-designed setup, the Pro Futura Scientia Programme still proves to be an attractive career
path for promising young scholars in the humanities and social sciences. In the current round of the
programme – the fifteenth round since it was initiated in 1999 - 29 scholars are competing for the sought-
after Fellowships.

Admission to the programme is based on nominations and these have been received from a total of fifteen
universities in five countries this time. The nominating bodies include the universities of Cambridge, Copen-
hagen, Iceland and Tartu, in addition to eleven Swedish universities. Among the candidates are 16 women
and 13 men, conducting research on a wide range of subjects, including the fields of e.g. Archaeology,
Cognitive Neuroscience, History, International Relations, Law, Media & Communications Studies, Peace &
Conflict Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

The nominating universities are being encouraged to propose researchers not only from their own university
but also from other universities in Sweden and abroad, but with an intended future association with the nomi-
nating university. In the current round, this has resulted in approximately 28% of the nominees having affiliations
also to other universities/organisations than the university nominating them. These second affiliations are found
in Denmark, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, and the USA.

After the usual extensive selection process, some 15 per cent of the nominees will eventually be admitted to the
programme. The final decision regarding the appointment of the Pro Futura XV Fellows is expected to be
announced in the early summer of 2020.

The Pro Futura Scientia Programme for early career scholars, set up in 1999 by the Swedish Collegium
for Advanced Study (SCAS) and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (the Swedish Foundation for Humanities
and Social Sciences; RJ), aims at providing optimal conditions for promising scholars in the humanities
and social sciences and to give them the chance to pursue curiosity-driven research. More than 50
scholars have been enrolled in the programme since the start.
